My Music Chart: March 2021

Hi all! I hope you all had a lovely Easter Weekend? Here we go again with another rundown of the music I have been listening to. Kicking it off with the stats:

The total songs played and total play count are up again this month after all of the stats were up in February. As you can see the other stats are a little down though. Simply, I listened to a slighter wider range of songs this month so there have been fewer repeats and more songs that didn't make the Top 20... Much like in February there have been some cracking tracks about so I'm going through new music at quite a rate. That is reflected in the actual chart as 15 songs from the Top 20 are New Entries so let's get into it...

Just quickly, the biggest drop in the chart was from Bingo Players & Ida Corr with "I Know This Club" which is down 14 places to number 17. I've spoken about it before as it was number 1 in January and clung in near the top for February too. If you haven't heard it yet, you need to!

The highest climber came from Tia Kofi and "Outside In", moving up eight places to number 4. I was very enthusiastic about in the February chart and clearly, that enthusiasm has not waned. I still think it's the best song ever released by a Drag Race alum.

Another big climber came from Riton & Nightcrawlers featuring Mufasa & Hypeman which is an absolute banger. "Friday" samples the iconic "Push The Feeling On" by Nightcrawlers which was originally released in 1992 before getting remixed and becoming a megahit in 1995. 25+ years later and that riff still works. If the clubs were open at the moment, this would be filling dancefloors. It was up six places to number 12 this month.

Steps featuring Michelle Visage was number 1 in February and while it hasn't kept the top spot, as I predicted, it is still right up there on the chart dropping only two places to number 3. I still don't see it going anywhere too soon as my daughter seems to really enjoy it and I have a real urge to learn the dance routine (no judgement required thank you very much). That means lots of repeat plays!

There is another slew of dance tracks appearing on the chart this month. I said it in February and I'll say it again now, the dance game is definitely on form for 2021! Sneaking in at number 20 is Firebeatz with "On Top Of Mine" featuring Kelli-Leigh who also has her own solo track coming in at number 5. Kelli-Leigh is already really well known for featuring on some real bangers but she is now releasing solo material too. Both are really great songs but "You Don't Know Me" clearly wins out for me. We all know people who seem to think they can have an opinion of you when they don't know you and this is the perfect embodiment of flipping the bird to those people. Give it a listen and pay attention to the lyrics and I promise you, you'll have someone in mind that you would sing this track to!

I do want to shout out Sam Pearce, who hits the chart at number 19 this month with his track "On & On". It is great to hear more LGBTQ+ artists getting airplay and this song is both a great dance track and lyrically poignant. I am absolutely keeping an on this artist and can't wait to see what gets released next.

"Heaven On My Mind" from Becky Hill, "Don't Play" from Anne-Marie, KSI & Digitial Farm Animals, "Morning" from Karen Harding & Shift K3Y and "Her" from Paige Eliza are a group of cracking dance tunes that are regularly heard on Gaydio and so they made their way into my own music collection.

In complete contradiction with the 'gay-law', I am not a massive fan of Eurovision anymore. I don't hate it, but I just haven't felt that all-encompassing excitement like I used to. That being said, the UK's entry for 2021 is actually brilliant. I honestly think that if it wasn't the UK entry and was from another more popular country it would score really well. James Newman was our entry for 2020 too but we know how that panned out. He is back for the 2021 contest with a new track and I really love it. With its big brassy earworm trumpets, "Embers" is a beautifully uplifting and positive dance-pop track. "Out of the embers, you and I gonna light up the room" seems like the exact statement we need right now after the dumpster fire that has been the last twelve months! I really hope it performs well at Eurovision 2021 in May and if not, it still deserves to become a massive summery hit anyway.

Another high new entry comes in at number 7 from Hayden James, Gorgon City & Nat Dunn. "Foolproof" is another dance track but is perhaps a little darker, moodier and edgier. From the very opening, I find it so atmospheric and I really love the way it gradually builds throughout the song. I can imagine this playing very late during a night out when everyone is several sheets to the wind and the sun is just about threatening to rise. It really is a superb track so watch the video here...

At number 2 was a random remix that I came across. I may have mentioned it before but "Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)" is my absolute favourite 80s track. That bassline is simply one of the most iconic collections of notes ever played in my opinion. The Steve Angello Remix Edit is essentially an extended version of the song with some extra oomph put on that bassline. I didn't realise I had listened to it quite so much but there you go.

A small nod to a couple of the Wandavision soundtrack pieces making it onto the chart this month. If you've seen it, you'll probably know why they made it on here.

And that leads me to this months number 1. I will say right now, I was most certainly never expecting to see this artist hit the chart, let alone take the top spot with such a margin. Again, this is another one that I just happened to hear on the Gaydio Breakfast show which I really liked so I decided to download the album. I wouldn't say I wasn't a fan when Lucy Spraggan appeared on the X-Factor but she wasn't one of my favourites either. When I heard "Animal" it was actually a bit of a surprise to me that it was Lucy but I  just loved it and the album that it comes from. She has definitely come a long way since the X-Factor days but is definitely a songwriter to be reckoned with. "Animal' is a bombastic and anthemic rally cry for knowing your own identity and responding to anyone who might a detractor. If you haven't heard it yet, I highly recommend you go check it out and give the whole of the "Choices" album a listen. I can absolutely say that I am a Lucy Spraggen fan now.

That is going to do it for the March charts and as always, you can view the full chart listing below. Of course, if you have any music recommendations or tracks you think I really should be listening to, drop me a comment below or drop me a line via Twitter
