My Music Chart: November 2020

Happy December 1st to one and all!

It's been a long time coming but I wanted to kickstart this little 'feature' back to life and so I got my spreadsheet brain working and started tracking all the music that I have been listening to on a monthly basis. If this is your first time checking out one of my music 'charts', I basically have a spectacularly geeky spreadsheet which pulls all of the data from iTunes to look at exactly what I have listened to over the last month and how many times I have listened to it over the month (as opposed to the overall total play count which iTunes displays). With just shy of 22k tracks in my library, there is certainly plenty to chose from.

Each month I also include some top-line data which summarises my listening for that month:

The numbers here aren't quite as high as they were back when I started this feature but that has a lot to do with not have long commutes listening to music like I used to. Nevertheless, the 429 songs played seems fairly high compared to some months, especially when I look at the total play count. The Top 20 effectively makes up one-fifth of everything I listened to in November.

The vast majority of tracks that hit my Top 20 are actually 'New Entries'. This is mainly because I have found myself listening to Gaydio for their breakfast show and so I have been adding lots of new tracks to the library over the last couple of months. Of course, this also has a very small impact on the number of tracks I then play directly from my own library. That being said, I have been downloading a lot of the tracks which I like the most.

The biggest drop on the chart came from Melanie C and the track 'Nowhere To Run' down 10 places to No. 11. If I had been writing this in October you would be seeing a large portion of the Top 20 taken up by tracks from her self-titled album which released at the beginning of the month. I am quite surprised that the vast majority of the album has dropped so much for November, but like I say I have been adding a lot more new music which has meant that my listening has been somewhat diverted by some killer releases. Melanie's latest album is probably amongst her absolute finest work though, so I would definitely recommend you check it out.

A quick mention for the Bluey Theme Tune which charted at No. 3 this month. If you don't know it, Bluey is a children's show and it is a massive favourite in our house and for our 2-year-old. I wouldn't necessarily recommend the theme itself but the show is pretty awesome for the whole family. The main reason the theme appears here is that the little one loves it and wants to dance around to it. There aren't too many of what I would class as 'Sophie's Songs' that will ever appear here (because I avoid playing them but Bluey did manage to wrack up the plays. I am surprised it wasn't even higher!

Little Mix has the real dominance on the chart this month, taking up 7 spots of the Top 20 which was to be expected when their new album dropped on November 6 meaning I have been playing it a lot throughout the month. The title track 'Confetti' proved to be my favourite song on the album at this point, coming in at No. 4. My love for Little Mix only seems to grow with each album. I love their powerhouse vocals and the songs just keep getting better. It's been quite a journey for them since their humble beginnings on the UK version of 'The X-Factor' and they really are better than ever.

In a strange crossover between my different loves, 'The Light in Us All' composed by Jim Guthrie & Jj Ipsen charted at No. 5. I say strange crossover because it is an instrumental piece and is the main theme from the game 'Planet Coaster'. I found myself listening to the game score quite a bit before the game finally had its console version release and I just love the feel-good nature of the music.

Speaking of feel-good, the No. 2 position was taken by Griff and her beautiful song 'Love Is A Compass' which was used in the 2020 Disney UK Christmas advert. I love a good Christmas advert and this song is pretty much my favourite of any. It is heartwarming, poignant and touching which made it fit superbly with the visual medium but also stands up as its own song, especially for this time of year. I am not saying that it's going to make it to the official Christmas Number 1 but it really does deserve some love. Check out this live rendition if you don't believe me...

Also showing multiple entries this month were Steps and their new album 'What The Future Holds' which was released on November 27th. Of course, some of the tracks had already been released so had more plays but in the case of 'To The Beat Of My Heart', 'Clouds' and 'Father's Eyes', the play counts are all from just 3 days! To say I am enjoying the album would be an understatement. I love a bit of Steps and right now, their special brand of pop seems to be exactly what 2020 needed. Naturally, they have taken the No. 1 spot with their single 'Something In Your Eyes', in part because of me listening but also because Sophie (the 2-year-old) seems to have also taken a real liking to the song and would probably dance around to it on repeat if I let her as was seen over on my Instagram stories. It will be interesting to see how the album performs next month in the face of lots of cheesy Christmas songs...

That pretty much rounds off my music chart for November but here is the full Top 20:

Naturally, if you have any music recommendations or tracks you think I really should be listening to, drop me comment below or drop me a line via Twitter.
