My Music Chart: November 2017

I swear the months are just flying by right now which means it is already time for another music chart update.

There was a very slight decrease in the songs played but the play count was up so yay! The Top 20 accounted for more of what I was listening to:

The top reentry saw '9 Crimes' come back into the charts at 4. I don't really need to discuss this one as it has been on the chart and written about before but it is a beautiful piano ballad that frequently gets replayed.

This month actually saw a whole lot of new entries on the chart with 13 out of the 20 songs not having hit the chart before - some of which I am surprised they haven't cropped up before. I won't talk about them all though.

Kelis saw another couple of new entries this month with both '4th of July (Fireworks)' and Stick Up. What I have always loved about Kelis is her ability to jump across genres and make it work. '4th of July' is a dance track with a killer hook and a really uplifting vibe to it. 'Stick Up' was an album track from 'Tasty' with a darker, urban R&B clatter of drums and slaps. For a song that was never a single release, it is one of my absolute favourites from her. Her strength on both tracks makes me think that there really isn't anything she can't do musically.

Michael Jackson had his first song on the chart this month (absolutely no idea how it's taken that long) with my favourite from the Bad album, 'Dirty Diana'. There isn't really much I can say about this song. It's Michael for heaven's sake! Bad was always my favourite album of his which is probably an age thing, given that this was ever present in my childhood. I remember my Mum having the original vinyl and playing it a lot. The eerie opening and echoing drums at the beginning hook me in every time and the build into the chorus with that rock guitar just make me want to scream this song out.

The appearance of a couple of tracks from Steps would have been from me brushing up on the lyrics ahead of seeing their most recent concert. 'Party On The Dancefloor' was awesome and made me like I was in my late teens all over again but also managed to stay current with current music trends. One of the best in the show (and probably in any of their shows) was 'One For Sorrow'. The song never ages for me and while it is very clearly inspired by Abba 'The Winner Takes It All' it is still an incredibly strong pop record and is great fun to dance to. Essentially it brings out the absolute camp in me and I love.

I also had a major reminiscence trip this month and for me, that comes from the Spice Girls. Anyone that knows me, especially back in my teens, knows that they were a big deal for me. I have probably spoken about it in blogs before so I won't go into it in loads of detail but for me, they were everything and anything left over! 'Holler' which was from the underappreciated third album, Forever, saw the girls show a different, more mature side. I always thought it was great that they were trying new styles and making sure they evolved to stay relevant to their own ages. 'Holler' is a very sassy number which is, for me, a perfect fit for a grown-up Spice Girl. Then, at Number 2 was the classic 'Spice Up Your Life'. To this day I still find this infectious samba irresistible when it comes to singing and dancing like nobody is watching.

Finally, at number 1 is probably what I would choose as my absolute favourite Spice Girls song. 'Viva Forever' is a stunningly beautiful ballad which came at a very apt time, just as Geri Halliwell left the group. It was the moment that probably ended the group in the long term which is a shame because I felt that despite everything they had achieved, they still had so much more left in them. Things were never quite the same, despite me loving the third album. They are at their best when all of 5 of them are there. I could write so much more about the group but I'll get back on track. Viva Forever is everything I expect in a pop ballad with beautiful harmonies and chocked full of emotion. I still think the video is a little bizarre but is supposed to reflect the loss of a friendship when you find adulthood apparently. Emma Bunton was quoted as saying that there is a sense of the characters "losing their innocence". Whatever it is about, it still accompanies a song that fills me with nostalgia and happiness. To me, the Spice Girls will always live on forever.

That pretty much wraps up the chart for November. I warn you now that a whole bunch of Christmas stuff has been added on my iPod for December so next month is probably going to be very seasonal. Until then, here is the full chart:
